Special Features
One of the most striking buildings in Ilfracombe, The Habit was originally known as the Crescent House Hotel. It opened in 1863 and still contains many original features in addition to its handsome façade overlooking the landmark Capstone Hill and sea front.
When we bought the building in 2018 it had undergone an extension renovation and had been run as a very successful boutique hotel. However, we had a dream to use it as a ‘sole-use’ hotel ie a big party house for family get-togethers, reunions or special birthdays.
Our ‘concierge’ lives 2 minutes away and is on hand during your stay to help with anything you need from beauty treatments to restaurant recommendations.
Indoors
Ground floor
As you enter from Fore Street you will be walk into the fabulous hallway with grand staircase.
Off the hallway is the former ballroom – now ‘the Party Room / Lounge. A big feature of this room is a large bar (we can stock it for you if you like!). There is also a large TV, sound system, sofas, chairs and tables and this room is a fantastic party venue. Doors lead out from this room to the top level terrace with chairs and tables, patio heaters and fabulous sea views. A spiral staircase takes you down from here to the garden, parking area and seafront.
Off this room is the dining room with seating for 30 and more wonderful views. This leads to the split-level conservatory which gives you another access to the garden and parking area. This is the perfect place for morning coffee or a glass of wine.
The large commercial style kitchen is off the dining room with 2 large commercial fridges, 2 range cookers and 2 dishwashers. Plus all the cooking equipment and utensils you could possibly require.
On the Lower Ground Floor there is a very large games room with table football, climbing wall, table tennis table, pool table, and large screen TV. There is also an Xbox and Wii U.
There are also gents toilets on this level.
Upstairs
The bedrooms are on 3 levels all with luxury ensuite bathrooms or shower rooms. All have TVs and 9 have sea views. Rooms are decorated with a fresh and contemporary feel, and no two are alike. Room five on the seafront side is painted baby blue, with white linen, and a mini chaise longue. Other rooms have a more decadent style, with chandeliers, deep plum hues and roll-top baths.
Outdoors
The Habit has a lovely terrace and garden offering fantastic views over the sea and Capstone Hill. There is an outside kitchen, BBQ and Pizza oven plus plenty of tables and chairs and outdoor heaters. The perfect place for al-fresco parties!
Local Area
A short stroll from Ilfracombe’s attractive harbour, galleries and restaurants, The Habit is situated on higher ground at the junction of Fore Street and the gently curving Sommers Crescent – which leads down towards the sea front and harbour.
Ilfracombe is a popular North Devon resort which attracts family visitors as well as the ‘surf set’ which is drawn by the Atlantic rollers at nearby Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands.
Set in the heart of the North Devon and Somerset coastline the Coastal Path runs through the town linking visitors with any number of hamlets, coves, inlets and villages.
It offers some of the finest coastal scenery in the country, along with its own harbour, sandy beach and hidden coves.
The area is always bustling with a traditional seaside atmosphere complete with the charming harbour, pavement cafes and offbeat shopping streets.
Damien Hirst who hails from the area has loaned the town his 20m tall statue, Verity who stands on the end of the pier. This has resulted in more and more tourists into the town and it is fast becoming known for being the place to go in North Devon if you are interested in art and / or good food. There are many galleries in the town and Fore Street boasts the only Michelin Starred restaurant in North Devon
